Humidity-responsive actuators normally contain hydrophilic groups that tend to interact with water molecules, thereby causing film deformation. In the latest issue of Advanced Materials, however, the research group reported 'Humidity- and Photo-Induced Mechanical', a hydrophobic light-humidity responsive crosslinked liquid crystal polymer actuator.Actuation of Cross-Linked Liquid Crystal Polymers”。Actuation of Cross-Linked Liquid Crystal Polymers”。 When the film is stimulated by humidity or ultraviolet light, the arrangement of anisotropic liquid crystal molecules changes, which brings about the macroscopic deformation of film. Since the film is very sensitive to changes in ambient humidity, the rapid deformation of the Christmas tree can be achieved just by using the moisture on the fingers. The dancing Christmas tree presented a nice Christmas blessing to everyone. Furthermore, the work was also reported as a highlight by Advanced Science News ("Dancing Trees:)Dual-Controlled Actuation of Polymer Films”!
