Abstract:

The cell biocompatibility of photodeformable azobenzene-containing liquid crystal polymer (PC11AB6) was investigated and compared with other common materials (polystyrene, glass and polydimethylsiloxane) in this study. After modifying surfaces with plasma treatment and coating, there was no significant difference in spreading state of Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells, human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) on the four materials; The expression of endothelial cell marker VWF in HUVEC and the expression of stem cell markers SOX2 and OCT3 in iPSC cultured on polymer PC11AB6 film were not significantly different from those of the other three materials; The growth and proliferation of HUVEC on the PC11AB6 film were comparable to those on polystyrene or glass, and were significantly better than those of polydimethylsiloxane. Overall, photodeformable azobenzene-containing LCP PC11AB6 is cell biocompatible, and shows potential in controllable microfluid transportation, micro biochemical analysis and the laboratory-on-chip system.
