Abstract:
Polyimides that integrate shape memory effect with photodeformation capability enable the material to be shaped on demand while possessing light-induced deformation ability, thereby expanding its multifunctionality. However, simultaneously achieving non-interfering photodeformation and shape memory performance in a single material remains challenging. In this study, a terpolymerization strategy was employed to prepare crosslinked azobenzene-containing polyimides. The crosslinked structure imparts thermally induced shape memory effect, while the azobenzene moieties in the side chains confer photodeformation ability. By introducing a second diamine monomer, 4,4'-(1,3-propanediylbis(oxy))dianiline (DA3 MG), which contains a short flexible segment, the azobenzene content in the polymer was modulated. This further optimized the overall performance of the polyimide while maintaining both photodeformation and shape memory properties, thereby enhancing its potential to meet diverse application requirements.
